That’s (Taiyo Yuden) LTH BD-R 25Gb 1-6x

There are two types of Blu-Ray blank discs – the regular sort that often doesn’t get much thought, now termed HTL, and a newer variant known as LTH (short for Low-to-High). Around the time when I bought my LG GGW-H20L, LTH media was already being discussed as the next big thing in Blu-Ray recording.

LTH media promised a way of using organic dyes, and existing equipment, to allow for much cheaper Blu-Ray recordable discs to be produced. The catch was that the new media needed burners and readers which would support it – and at the time, these were scarce.

The GGW-H20L was one that could use the LTH discs – so I decided to give some LTH discs a go – a 10 disc spindle ordered directly from Japan.

But before I go onto testing these discs, it should be acknowledged that the popularity of LTH discs is still limited, compatibility with some set-top players is still a problem, but worst of all, longevity is definitely an issue. With this in mind, there are really no compelling reasons to use LTH discs aside from if you’re interested in the media itself.

One thing I always ask myself is Why are Taiyo Yuden so invested into LTH? As far as I can tell, they make no conventional BD-R discs, only LTH. Given that they were one of the reference points for good media in CD and DVD, why would they back an inferior technology? Is there something they know that we don’t? Maybe these LTH discs are better? Unfortunately, the only way to tell is with time.

Anyway – onto the discs. The first thing you will notice with these LTH discs is just how light the underside is. It is very reflective and is a bright shiny green haze similar to CD-R. That’s probably the closest way to describe it. Most BD-Rs of the HTL type are a metallic chocolate brown, or grey colour and are quite dark. I have updated my BCA scan collection with the BCA of this disc.

Taiyo Yuden LTH Recording Side

The media code is TYG-BD-Y05. According to DVD-Identifier, it reports:

While the disc itself is rated at 6x, the speed it burns will ultimately depend on your burner and its strategy support.

Burning with LiteOn iHBS312 PL16

This disc is supported at 4x and 6x on the iHBS312. A burn was made at 6x using a Z-CLV strategy.

A readback was made, the TRT was perfect:

The media was scanned in the iHBS312 that burnt it without removing it from the tray. The scan shows an acceptable burn quality, within limits. The two spikes are rather unfortunate, but the jitter level can be seen to step with the change in burn speed. This suggests better results may be had with a burn at 4x, but even then, the result is entirely acceptable as it is.

Burning with LG GGW-H20L YL07

This media is supported in the GGW-H20L at 2x. Burning was completed successfully at 2x, taking a fairly long time as expected.

A TRT was also performed on the GGW-H20L, but unfortunately, it appears the drive is restricted to reading at 2x for LTH media. The readback was flawless.

The media was transported to the iHBS312 for a quality scan, achieving excellent results (you’d hope so, given the time invested into burning it).

Conclusion

It still makes me wonder why Taiyo Yuden is producing LTH discs. But we can see above that the iHBS312 really isn’t that great with the media. It produces acceptable results. But the older LG GGW-H20L manages to achieve much better results with the media, making excellent burns, albiet very slowly at 2x only.

With the disadvantages of compatibility, read speed, price (yes, more expensive than HTL for me), and longevity, there really is no compelling reason to go with LTH media other than for some research. But it was definitely nice to get my hands on some to visually see the difference and put my burners through their paces.
